What is Buy Fresh
Buy Local (BFBL)?
BFBL is a local
foods campaign to encourage the community to support local farmers.
This includes everyone from individual consumers to larger buyers,

the local economy
- Keeps small farmers on the land
- Reduces the amount of miles that food is
transported
- Opens new markets for local farmers
- Increases availability of fresh and
nutritious foods in our community
- Strengthens communities through building
relationships
- Raises awareness about the diversity of
foods produced in the region
Who is involved
and who can be members?
The Buy Fresh Buy
Local Central Illinois chapter was established by Illinois Stewardship
Alliance with a group a local farmers and consumers. Memberships may be
for farms, restaurants, farmers’ markets, grocery stores or
institutional food services (for example, hospitals or universities).
We are also working with consumers to raise awareness and get them
involved in their local food system.
When did it start?
Farmers started
meeting in early Spring 2008 and the Steering Committee was formed with
farmers, consumers and Illinois Stewardship Alliance staff. The chapter
was officially established in May of 2008. The kick-off for the
campaign was June 19, 2008, at a Local Flavors dinner. The Local Food
Guide was released in early July 2008.
Where will the
campaign be conducted?
At this time the
campaign will be limited to roughly a 50 mile radius around Springfield
including the following counties: Sangamon, Macoupin, Montgomery,
Christian, Macon, Logan, DeWitt, Mason, Menard and Morgan.
How will the
campaign work?
When members use
an eye-catching and recognizable logo that will be displayed throughout
the community, consumers can easily identify locally produced foods and
choose to support local farmers.
