I took this picture of my garden at 7:00 AM on June 18, 2008. As you can see my onions, tomatoes, and potatoes are doing nicely (thanks to my secret supplier of horse manure compost!). This year I assumed the “I’d rather do a few things well, than a lot of things poorly” attitude, hence my limited planting. However, this amount will last us through most of the winter. I planted organic heirloom potatoes, including: Bintje, King Edward, Irish Cobbler, White Rose, and Russet Burbank. Several of my tomato starter plants came from Hill Street Farms and include Brandywine, German Sweet, and German Johnson. I also planted Early Girl and Roma tomatoes. Finally, my white onions were planted from sets. My wife Jane is growing organic herbs in containers, including Italian parsley, oregano, thyme, and sage.

It’s really my husband’s garden, but he allows me to help. This photo was taken in mid-June. We have harvested radishes, lettuce, peas, rutabagas (for greens and now as small bulbs), onions, asparagus, and lambs quarters (an edible weed!!). We’re looking forward to tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, corn, green beans, potatoes, zucchini, cabbage, broccoli, and grapes – as well as apricots, peaches, and apples from the trees you see in the background. (BTW: the cattle panels in the garden are used to support peas, cucumbers, and pole beans.)
The Illinois Stewardship Alliance would like to see photos of your garden and maybe we’ll post them on the website.
If you send your garden photos, please provide your name, where you are from, what’s growing and any comments (please limit to 150 words); photos should be in .jpg or .gif format.
